Within months of our wedding, my husband, Dylan, was diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), on his shoulder and in some nearby lymph nodes. The future we had imagined together got put on hold before we had much a chance to start it as a married couple, but we hadn't imagined our future together would be cut so incredibly short. Only 10 months after we got married and only 8 months after his diagnosis, the cancer that had taken residence inside of him spread rapidly and killed him on Tuesday, August 6, 2019. My team Chasing the Ice Cream Truck for Dylan is inspired by our shared love of ice cream, which we enjoyed on our first date together and many to come after that.
Given that RMS is a childhood cancer occurring mostly in people under the age of 18 but up to the age of 40, Dylan received his chemotherapy treatments from a team that specialized in RMS at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. He also went to Froedtert for his surgery to remove the tumor on his shoulder and for his radiation treatments. Dylan's medical teams at Children's and Froedtert were so wonderful and have become like family to us through our short time working closely with them.
I support the Race to Cure Sarcoma Milwaukee walk especially because proceeds from the race go directly to Children's and Froedtert locally as well as the Sarcoma Foundation of America (SFA) nationally. It is SO important to continue supporting these organizations so that current and future sarcoma patients can receive the best care and support during their cancer journeys and live to have countless wonderful adventures.
