Spinning for Parkinson's Disease
Cycling provides a range of benefits for those with movement disorders. Research conducted by Dr. Jay Alberts of the Cleveland Clinic, promoted through his Pedaling for Parkinson’s project, has shown that clients experience a reduction in symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD) after completing an eight-week cycling program, including a decrease in tremors and improvement in handwriting.
Research has shown that people with (PD) experience significant benefits from biking/spinning on a regular basis. Depending upon pace and intensity, cycling has been shown to:
- Improve overall motor function
- Reduce tremor
- Reduce bradykinesia
- Reduce rigidity
- Improve aerobic capacity
- Improve mood
- Improve cognitive function
- Increase joy and social connections
- Decrease UPDRS scores (Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale)
At InMotion, Certified Parkinson’s Cycling Coach Sandy Ellis leads a class specifically designed for people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Each class runs 60 minutes and includes 10 minutes of warm-up, 40 minutes of intervals, and 10 minutes of cool down.
During these classes, our clients:
- Become familiar with spinning bike features, and setting up a spin bike
- Become familiar with RPMs & cadence
- Learn about heart rate zones and health
- Have fun!
